What is grid support?
Grid support is when Base uses your battery to help balance the electricity grid during periods of high demand. This is one of the key ways Base earns revenue — and keeps your electricity rates low.
How it works
Base's software automatically manages when your battery charges and discharges. During peak demand periods (typically mid-to-late afternoon on hot Texas days), Base may discharge your battery to send energy back to the grid. This is called grid support mode.
Does grid support affect my backup?
No. Base always maintains your minimum backup reserve at all times:
Single battery: at least 5 hours of backup at low usage
Two batteries: at least 10 hours of backup at low usage
Your battery will always be ready to back up your home if a power outage occurs, even during grid support events.
Why does Base do this?
By aggregating thousands of Base batteries, Base can act as a virtual power plant — providing grid balancing services that earn revenue for Base. This revenue allows Base to offer below-market electricity rates and a low-cost backup battery to members.
